In 2021, Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. completed the Adams Street Water Main Extension project design for the West Des Moines Water Works. The project was designed concurrently with the Adams Street Elevated Water Storage Tank project and involved constructing 24-inch and 16-inch water mains to connect the new tower to the existing water system. The project was completed in early 2022.

The project involved approximately 1940 LF of 24-inch and 16-inch water mains from the tower site along Adams Street to connect to existing water mains at Veterans Parkway to the west and Orilla Road to the east. The water mains were sized for estimated future high flows to and from the tower due to the presence of both a current and future Microsoft data center within the tower’s pressure zone.

Live taps of 24-inch and 16-inch water mains were done at each end of the project using tapping sleeves and valves to eliminate the need to shut down large feeder mains for the connections. The project also crossed under and replaced a section of the Great Western Trail.

Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. provided project design and construction administration services. The total cost for the project was approximately $667,000.
